happy groundhog day

According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil (a very special groundhog) sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

I sure hope that he does not see his shadow this year. There has been much too much snow and cold winter weather for so many to endure. I am posting this early so that at least I can hope for everyone before the official word from Punxsutawney Phil is announced.

If you are looking for some great entertainment, check out this very cool video of last year’s Groundhog Day ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. I have already watched it three times! Groundhog day was always a big thing in school when I was little. It is barely mentioned here in Hawaii.

This video clip reminds me so much of the movie, Groundhog Day.  I highly recommend this movie if you haven’t seen it yet. It is a movie I could watch over and over again.

It’s Groundhog Day!!

  1. Happy Groundhog Day! A co-worker went up to PA for this a few years ago. She said that the whole thing was a hoot.
We might get some more snow this week (fine with me!).

  2. Hi Girasoli, I liked that movie with Bill Murray too, but I must admit that I didn’t know so much about the actual GroundHog day. I thought this video clip was pretty cool and it’s interesting to watch. I read Anne’s blog a few minutes ago and read an article that she linked that they are expecting more cold weather. I hope they get a break in the cold weather soon.
    Thanks for the interesting post!

  3. Well, I just learned that North Carolina has its own groundhog and his name is Sir Walter Wally. He came out at noon today (like 45 minutes ago) and saw his shadow!

  4. I haven’t seen the movie yet either, I should put it on my Netflix queue!
Too bad he predicted six more weeks of winter. Good for me, I will be on Maui :)

  5. That movie was such a hoot — can you imagine waking up to hear Sonny and Cher singing I Got You, Babe every morning for all eternity? No wonder the Bill Murray character was desperate to change the course of his life!

  6. That was a fun video! Thanks for sharing.
We have our own groundhog: Arizona Phil. I have no idea what he predicted but six more weeks of Arizona winter doesn’t sound too bad compared to the rest of the country.

  7. By now, I am sure that you heard that P. Phil saw his shadow and went back to his burrow as there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Phoeey on him! :)

  8. I just flashed on the school projects we’d always do with a stryofoam cup and a popsicle stick and a drawing of a cute groundhog. This was arranged to make him pop up out of the cup to look around. the little kids had so much fun making those for Ground Hogs day.

  9. Darn that groundhog! I heard this morning on the news that P. Phil has not seen his shadow only 14 times in 123 years. That makes me sort of suspicious that this early spring thing is even a possibility.
Chiocciola, the movie will be around for years so no rush. I should warn you that it is sort of a silly movie and one that needs to grow on you. The more you watch it, the funnier it seems to get, or at least for me.
Annie, that must have been cool! Sir Walter Wally? That sure is an interesting name! I have read about a few official groundhogs today. I wonder what happens if some predict more winter and others predict an early spring?
Kathy, I learned a few facts while growing up and then more recently on the website I linked. The movie really does not go into the details that much.
candi, we have had a cold winter (for us). I was so cold at work this morning (although partly due to the stupid AC that was on in my room – not my choice at all) that I could not even write. I would not trade our weather for anywhere else though and am very grateful for our warm weather :)
sandrac, that would be scary! Meeting Ned Ryerson and hearing “bing!” day after day would be what would drive me crazy :)
María, glad you liked it. I was singing that silly song when walking out to my car this morning. I am amazed at all of the groundhogs around the country! Arizona Phil, now that is original :)
Eden, yep, heard this morning when I woke up.
Barb, cute idea! I would steal it if only groundhog day had some meaning here. Most kids think that winter and snow is only in December for Christmas! I would use your cute idea! We make Santas using a chopstick instead of a popsicle stick and a milk carton decorated as chimneys instead of a cup. We sing the song – Where is Santa (like Where is Thumbkin) ..here I am (having the kids pop their santas up out of the chimneys.

  10. Gobbler’s Knob…heehee, what a funny name (giggles my inner five year old!) Love the video, thanks for posting it! I think we just like to have someone(something) to blame for our winters that drag on and on…and a groundhog is as good a scapegoat as any!!

  11. Cool post, girasole!
I love the movie. Can you imagine re-living over and over and over…?
There are people who have Groundhog Day parties, watch the movie over again, have the same party over and over every year! I think I just might plan one or two or…
