I took these photos at the Hamakua Marsh in March 2009. I planned to take more photos of the sign, but it started to rain pretty hard that day. Part of the Hamakua Marsh is located right behind Down to Earth, a health food store that I shop at when in Kailua.
I usually check out the birds at this wetland marsh whenever I stop at this Down to Earth, even if I don’t have my camera with me. This was the first time I have seen an Auku’u Black-Crowned Night Heron. I was pretty excited and so grateful that I had my camera with me that day. I have not seen the Ae‘o and the ‘Alae Ke‘oke‘o birds yet.
girasoli, what lovely bird shots!
Happy weekend and thanksgiving holiday:)

That is a beautiful heron and so different from the ones I see here. I love the sharp colors and you did an excellent job capturing his beauty.

Great photos, G. I don’t think that place existed when I lived in Kailua many years ago, or it would have been a favorite of mine as well. Happy Thanksgiving! m

Thanks everyone.
Marta, you will have to check this place out. It isn’t too far from where you will be staying.
menehune, I am not sure how long it has been around. I am guessing longer than when the Down to Earth store was built in Kailua. It might have been that there was no access to get close to the birds until then.

Ok trying this again. I sent a comment last night… but it probably went into the limbo of cyberspace… IB challenges.
Your shots of the heron looked so much like the “promo” photo… I had to do a double take to check it out. You did a great job on photographing some of the birds featured!
