happy new year!!

Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!! Happy New Year!! Buon Anno!! Tanti Auguri Everyone!!

I took this video right outside my door last year on New Year’s Eve at midnight. Every single firework you see is illegal. This is what the sky looks like all over Oahu on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks have been going off since October in my neighborhood this year.

  1. It is 9:30 and nothing in our neighborhood yet. It is probably too cold. And you are right – it is worse than what happens here in Edmonds on July 4th. Not that it is any comfort.
Have a wonderful, healthy and prosperous New Year. A toast to many more great trips.

  2. WOW, some of those are the fireworks one would see at a city sponsored fireworks event. Some must be massive! Ok, festively dangerous. :)
Have yourself a wonderful 2010 and looking forward to seeing you in San Diego in March.

  3. Happy New Year Girasoli! Wow, that is a cool video. It was funny that a car alarm even went off in the middle of the fireworks. You had a really great view from your house of what looks like several fireworks display.
Wishing you and your family a very Happy, Safe and Healthy New Year! It’s now 7:00 am here in California and I’m getting ready to watch the Rose Bowl Parade from the comfort of my living room though rather than in the cold. :)
    Enjoy your first in 2010!

  4. Can’t see the video due to a slow connection here at the apartment but I’ll bet it is spectacular. We saw a few fireworks scattered in the area around the Eiffel Tower but nothing special. The highlight really is seeing the tower all lit up at midnight. I’ll post some photos later on.
Wishing you an awesome 2010 with wonderful adventures. I wished I could go to San Diego and meet you, Sandra, Trekcapri, Marta and all the ST friends. I’m so close but can’t be there on that weekend.
    Happy and prosperous New Year!

  5. I like “festively illegal” as Eden stated above. They are amazing though – the sounds and the lights! I could even hear the car alarms going off in your video. Much better than the ones on Waikiki Beach from Hilton Hawn Village:) Happy New Year, G! PS: Did you get to watch the Winter Classic Hockey Game at Fenway today? What a blast it was to watch a Bruins hockey game on the Fenway field.

  6. Candi, Happy New Year to you too!! Wishing you a great new year in your new house!
Marta, they were even worse this year. Major fireworks started at 6:30 and went straight through past 1 am (with of course the big finale at midnight). Again more fireworks tonight. Wishing you a wonderful New Year also with many new trips ahead.
Eden, festively dangerous! Now that is an interesting term :) Fortunately there was no major damage this year but the festive part I am really over. Wishing you a wonderful New Year also. Yes, see you in San Diego :)
Carin, hi! Happy New Year to you too!
Kathy, those are not firework displays put on by the city. They are fireworks set off from driveways all over Oahu. The first couple of years I thought it was cool. Now I can’t wait til it is over. I am trapped in my house. The smoke is so thick that you can barely see when driving at night and the car alarms have been going off for months with the bombs being set off. Houses rattle. Seriously, I thought I lost a few decibels of my hearing when I went outside to chat with the neighbors at midnight for a few minutes. It has gotten very out of control the past few years. I want to wish you a wonderful New Year! I used to always watch the Rose Bowl parade growing up. It is usually over by the time I wake up here in Hawaii though. I hope you enjoyed it this year :)
Maria, I was in Paris in 1999 during the summertime. I remember seeing a special countdown on the Eiffel Tower for 2000. It must be very cool to see the Eiffel Tower on New Year’s Eve. Looking forward to your photos. I am sorry you won’t be able to make it to San Diego but certainly understand. Hopefully someday we will finally meet. Happy New Year!
menehune, they are pretty at midnight and if they only went off at midnight – even just 11 to 12:30, I would be fine with it, but… (see my reply to Kathy for more on this). Yes, I did happen to see the 3rd period and overtime. Strange but also pretty cool! My aunt was a huge Bruins fan during the Bobby Orr days. She used to have his poster hanging in her room. I used to follow them some back then. I also was a hockey cheerleader for a year – too cold though! Happy New Year!

  7. Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that. I can actually see how it would get tedious if it went on for hours (or worse, days).
We spent NY Eve at the campground. There was a rowdy crowd of people down at the other end of the campground – which surprised us since usually not many people go camping in the snow and sub-zero temperatures! But they were there to party and bring in the new year with a bang, so set off fireworks at midnight, but only a few minutes worth. So we watched, whooped and hollered, had a drink or two with them, and then escaped back to our own family friendly bonfire by our own campers!
Wishing you much joy and happiness in 2010!! Happy New Year!!

  8. Happy New Year, Girasoli! Great video, I can’t believe those are all illegal fireworks, simply set off by families celebrating the season. Brilliant! But talk about loud!!!!
Anyway, all the best in 2010. I hope you have great health, some fun travels (even if not to Italy) and many wonderful photo opportunities!

  9. Anne, I have calmed down a little now that we have experienced an entire day/night without one boom. Sounds like you had a great New Year’s Eve. Chilly but fun! Wishing you much joy and happiness also in the 2010. New Year!!
sandra, even though I grumble, I am amazed at how it is just like being at a sponsored firework display. Wishing you good health and a fabulous year also. Another trip to Italy! Lucky you! Can’t wait to read more about your adventures.
