This was a tough theme. After hunting through all of my photos, I finally found two that would fit the theme.
The first is a photo of La Bocca della Verità (The Mouth of Truth). I took this photo in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome.
The second photo is of a chipped bell. I posted this photo once before as part of my views from the roof of the Basilica di San Pietro post back in November 2007. I tried to find out more information about this bell, but came up empty handed. The number 1859 is carved into the wood. Anyone know the history of this bell?

Great photos, both of them. Makes me want to go back to Rome! I’m curious about the bell now too – hope someone comes along who knows something. It’s beautiful.

PS – I went to the mall today and saw this young girl with these very cool Obama earrings on. I asked her where she got them and she said in DC when she went to the Inauguration. She said there was so much cool stuff for sale. I’d love to have those earrings!

Those are both fabulous choices and shots. It is amazing how beautiful old chipped pieces can be and those are wonderful.

Hi Girasoli, great theme photo selections! That first photo reminds me so much of the movie “Roman Holiday”! When I went to visit it, I just had to stick my hand in it.:) The photo of the chipped bell is cool too. I think it would be interesting to find out the history of that bell too.

Love both photos! La Bocca is such a cool place. First time I saw it, the area around it was cordoned-off because a car had run into the rail in front of the church and there was debris everywhere. It was disturbing to see the damage and to think of the injuries people in the car(s) must have sustained.
I hope we hear from someone who knows about the history of the bell. It is a beauty.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all of your comments :) I have been saving the Bocca della Verità photo for a while for a PhotoHunt post. Funny thing is I didn’t even think of it for chipped until after looking through hundreds of photos.
Yes I did take the mandatory photo of my hand inside the mouth but I didn’t like the way it turned out and didn’t dare ask for a retake since the line was so long. I have been to see this twice now. Both time, junk pictures of me. I guess this is my Trevi Fountain. Instead of tossing coins in the fountain, I get a junk picture taken and then have to return again :)
I love the movie Roman Holiday. It is even more fun to watch it now that I have been to some of the places in the movie, including seeing La Bocca della Verità.
I have never seen the Janus sculpture (or don’t think so). I will have to check it out the next time I visit Rome.
I am also very curious about the bell. I started a new discussion on Slow Travel hoping someone will be able to fill us in on this mystery.

I loved Rome even though I was only there for about three days. I didn’t even scratch the surface and do plan to go back someday. Roman Holiday is such a great movie!
I didn’t take photos of the earrings (didn’t have my camera with me). But they were the red and blue Obama hope image, not that big but dangly so that you could definitely see him. I loved them!
I hope someone comes along on Slow Talk with info about the bell!
