the American League’s MVP is awarded to…

…one of my favorite Red Sox players, Dustin Pedroia!!!!

The Most Valuable Player honor is awarded to one player from each league (American League and National League) at the end of the season each year. I’m really not sure exactly who votes for the awards but I did find the 5 criteria for this award:

1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.
2. Number of games played.
3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.
4. Former winners are eligible.
5. Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.

Dustin Pedroia was definitely a very important and valuable member of the Red Sox team this year. I personally do not believe the Red Sox would have gone as far as they did without him. Dustin Pedroia, also known as “Dusty” and “Pedey”, displayed incredible defensive skills all year long at second base. He was one of those players that gave 120% every day. He displayed the kind of attitude and work ethic that made him a wonderful role model both on and off the field. He went out there and motivated his teammates every game. On the offensive side, Dustin Pedroia hit .326 with 17 homers and 83 RBI (Runs Batted In). He also led the American League in doubles and runs scored. He was tied for the league lead in hits and he even stole 20 bases.

Dustin Pedroia was the first second baseman to earn the MVP award in nearly a half-century. Nellie Fox was the last second baseman to become AL MVP, in 1959 with the White Sox. Along with the MVP award this year, Dustin was also awarded the 2008 Silver Slugger Award and the 2008 AL 2B Gold Glove. Last year (his first year in the Major Leagues) he won 2007 AL Rookie of the Year.

Congratulations Pedey!! Way to go!!!!

Here’s a short video which includes photos as well as a nice description of Dustin Pedroia’s accomplishments this year:

  1. Hi G: I still chuckle when I see/read how much you are a FANtastic Fenway fan — enjoy the sun and warmth ‘cuz ‘Baby, it’s cold outside’ (as the song goes …) in Boston. Aloha, M

  2. I can’t believe my husband didn’t tell me that. We are Red Sox fans too and I actually got to go to Boston to a game back in August. It was Manny’s last game. Your blog is so pretty. I love the feel to it. I was just visiting from Leslie’s.

Annie, I am not sure how old he is but this is only his second year playing in the majors. He is an amazing player!
