traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena (2011 trip)

Wednesday, June 15th:
Instead of a lesson Wednesday morning, Andrea arranged a tour to learn about the famous Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena. We met at the train station in Bologna and took the train together to Modena.

When we arrived in Modena, we were a little early so we visited the amazing Duomo. This was my second visit to this church. Andrea told me many interesting facts about this church during our visit.

We also took a quick peek inside the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino. What an amazing sight!

Then we walked over to Acetaia di Giorgio for my tour.  I learned many facts about Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, how it is made, the different flavors (which we were able to sample – YUM!!), and how it is VERY different than the balsamic vinegar sold in the stores. I ordered a bottle and had it shipped to my house. I still have a few drops left! Most of the barrels in the slideshow below may look the same but there are different wood barrels, which produce different flavors and barrels and in different stages of the process. Great great experience!!

After our visit, we returned to the train station and took the train back to Bologna.

Andrea made me my favorite dish for lunch ~ tortelloni burro e salvia (butter and sage over tortelloni which are like mini ravioli) along with a wonderful salad and also some fish!

After lunch, I had my Italian lesson for the day.

Another wonderful day!!

Next up – Thursday ~ a visit to Dozza
